Your Heart’s Not In It (And Yes They Can Tell)

The stories I’m about to share sting a little—because I’ve lived it from both sides.

I’ve been the client who felt the heartbreak of realizing the person I invested in was no longer invested in me. And—I’ve also been the coach who started to feel detached after the client said “yes.”

Both experiences taught me powerful lessons about the importance of energy, alignment, and choosing the right clients—and the right service providers.

So, let me tell you two stories.

Story 1: Kate Price (Name Changed for Privacy)

For the most part, I’m thrilled to work with my clients.

I love diving into their visions, uncovering what’s holding them back, and watching them take meaningful action to create results. That’s why I do what I do—it’s fulfilling work.

But there was one client, Kate, who showed me what happens when the alignment just isn’t there.

Kate came to me eager to get results and excited to work together, but almost immediately, something felt off.

No matter what I coached her on, no matter how clear or actionable the strategies were, she just didn’t apply them.

We’d have the same conversations week after week, and nothing moved forward.

At first, I tried harder—thinking maybe I wasn’t explaining things well enough or providing enough support. But the truth was, either she just wasn’t ready to do the work or we just weren’t the right fit together.

Over time, my energy began to drain.

I dreaded our sessions, knowing they’d end in frustration—for both of us.

I started to feel like I wasn’t making a difference, and eventually, I had to have a hard conversation.

I let her know I didn’t think she should renew our engagement and that it would be better for her to find another coach.

It wasn’t an easy conversation, but it was necessary.

Afterward, I took a hard look at why I’d said “yes” to her in the first place.

What I realized was that I needed to be much more intentional about who I chose to work with.

I’m not the kind of coach who enjoys pulling people along.

I work best with clients who are ready to absorb, implement, and take action.

When I stay aligned with those kinds of clients, the energy stays high, the work feels fulfilling, and the results are transformative.

That experience with Kate taught me the importance of working with the right clients—because when the fit isn’t there, no one wins.

Story 2: When I Was the Client

On the flip side, I’ve also been the client who felt the sting of misaligned energy.

I’d invested thousands of dollars into a coach I was so excited to work with.

I was ready to put in the work, thrilled to learn from her expertise, and confident this investment would take my business to the next level.

At first, everything felt promising. She showed up prepared, answered my questions, and provided what I’d technically paid for. But something was missing.

It became obvious pretty quickly that she wasn’t fullyinvested in me.

There was so much energy on the front end—during the sales process—but once I signed the contract, that spark disappeared.

The support I got was good but not great. It wasn’t the next-level care and commitment I’d been led to believe I was investing in.

It hurt! Not because she didn’t deliver on the technical aspects of our work, but because it felt like she wasn’t truly invested in my success.

She had done just enough to fulfill her obligations, but I could tell I wasn’t a priority. And the disconnect left me feeling disappointed, frustrated, and hesitant to ever invest in coaching at that level again.

The Lesson: Misaligned Energy Hurts Everyone

Both experiences—working with Kate and being on the other side as a client—taught me this:

When the energy isn’t right, it impacts more than just one relationship.

When you’re the coach, a misaligned client can drain your energy, take the joy out of your work, and leave you questioning your abilities.

And when you’re the client, working with someone who isn’t fully invested in you can shake your confidence, dull your momentum, and make you second-guess future investments in yourself.

The truth is, this happens more often than we’d like to admit—especially for entrepreneurs in the “7-Figure Poor” cycle.

Growth can happen so fast that you’re tempted to take on as many clients as possible, even if they’re not the right fit. But this approach is unsustainable.

If your business is built on integrity, connection, and long-term success, saying yes to the wrong clients can cost you far more than just your energy—it can cost you your passion for your work. And that is a sure ticket to the “7-Figure Poor” train.

How to Break the Cycle

The solution starts long before anyone says “yes.”

It begins with clarity and intentionality—choosing clients who are aligned with your energy, your values, and your style. Here’s how to do it:

1. What is “Right” For You?

Before you can attract the right clients, you need to know what “right” looks like for you.

  • What kind of clients and projects excite you?
  • What problems do you have the expertise to solve, easily?
  • What kind of behaviors align with your coaching style?
  • And just as importantly, what are your dealbreakers?

Saying “no” to the wrong clients is just as important as saying “yes” to the right ones.

This is particularly important for 7-Figure Business Owners to consider.

When high revenue is coming in the business can go into auto-pilot. Don’t let it happen.

Continue to consider if you have “right fit” clients. Its an amazing way out of “7-Figure Poor”

2. Be Honest in Your Messaging

Clear, authentic messaging doesn’t just attract clients—it attracts the rightclients.

When you’re upfront about who you are, what you offer, and who you work best with, you naturally filter out those who aren’t a good fit.

Make sure to articulate this clearly to your clients.

3. Set Expectations From the Start

A great client relationship is a two-way commitment.

Be clear from the beginning about what you expect from your clients—not just what they can expect from you.

This mutual understanding creates a stronger foundation for success.

4. Check In With Yourself Regularly

Even with the best boundaries, there may still be times when the energy dips.

When that happens, take a step back and reflect.

  • Is the client not following through?
  • Are you feeling overcommitted?

Identifying the root cause is the first step to addressing it.

“7-Figure Poor” business owners skip this step because they feel they don’t have the time to do this. When in fact, its one of the things that keeps them stuck in “7-Figure Poor”.

5. Honor the Trust Your Clients Place in You

When someone hires you, they’re trusting you with their dreams, goals, and resources.

Respecting that trust means showing up fully—but it also means creating the conditions that allow you to bring your best energy to every interaction.

Keep clarity and control in place when it comes to how you serve your clients.

Right fit clients will roll with your requirements especially when they understand it is keeping you at your best.

The Ripple Effect of Aligned Energy

When you work with clients who inspire and energize you, everything changes. The relationship feels collaborative instead of transactional.

You’re excited to show up for them, and that energy fuels their progress.

The results are transformative—and they reflect back on your reputation in the best possible way.

But when you settle for misaligned clients, the opposite happens. Resentment builds. Your energy fades. The work feels heavy, and the damage to your confidence and your reputation can take a long time to repair.

The Takeaway

The clients you say “yes” to aren’t just a reflection of your business—they’re a reflection of you.

Choosing to work with the right clients allows you to stay energized, do your best work, and create the kind of results that build your reputation as someone who delivers with integrity and heart.

So, let this be your reminder—for you and for me—that every “yes” matters.

Choose intentionally. Work with clients who align with your values, your energy, and your style. And remember: the goal isn’t just to land clients. It’s to build relationships that inspire, energize, and create success on both sides.

Because when you do that, the results speak for themselves—and so does your legacy.
